How to Write a Process Essay

Process trials are essays that explain to the audience how to do something or how to complete a task. This may involve explaining how to put elements or ingredients to make a finished product, such as in a recipe. These trials can also explain how to achieve a goal. For essay example, a process trial might detail the steps that must be taken to graduate from a private college. Regardless of the topic, all process trials should clearly explain in detail how to perform or perform a task.

Plan the essay. It is useful to use a schematic format to draw the necessary background on the chosen topic, to compile a list of necessary materials, to determine the steps to be followed, to describe some advice or warnings, and to describe what The ultimate goal or product should be. You may also be able to choose a title for your essay right now, titles should clearly state what you are explaining. An example might be “How to Make Banana Bread.”

Write the introduction. The introduction should be seen not only as a way to introduce the subject in question, but also to provide basic information about the process being written. State what the purpose of the process is and what elements will be needed to meet that objective. You should also include the important general caveats or considerations the reader should know before starting the project or task. It also includes the time it takes to complete the task.

Write the body of the essay. The body is made up of all the points between the introduction and the conclusion. In a process trial, the body paragraphs are composed of the steps that must be taken in order to complete the task. These steps should be detailed and written in clear and simple language. Make sure all the steps are written in the order they should be followed. Keep in mind that every paragraph of the body should be centered on an important step in the process. Minor steps can be included within a paragraph. For example, in the Banana Bread recipe example, an entire paragraph would not focus on “Preheating the oven to 350 degrees F.” Be sure to include any preventative information associated with a particular action in the same paragraph of that step.

Compose the conclusion. The final paragraph should detail what the end product should be or what goal should be achieved if body measurements are followed. If there are some tips that would not fit the steps, they can be included here. As with all conclusions, this should bring the essay to its logical end.

Review and edit the essay. After writing the process essay, correct for errors of spelling and grammar. Try to read your essay as if you did not know anything about it. This way you can determine if your steps are detailed enough for any reader to understand the process without prior information. Make editing changes accordingly.
